Altiras Recovery Produces Spec Road Base from 100 Year Old Refinery Waste
Monday, October 12, 2015
Houston TX – Altiras Recovery, a wholly owned subsidiary of Altiras Holdings, announced today it has developed a beneficial use solution for acidic, odorous, 100 year old refinery waste. The waste is a concentrated asphaltene solid material that releases a trapped acidic gas, known as sulfur dioxide, when disturbed.
According to Todd Pencarinha, President of Altiras Recovery, “The sulfur oxide in the raw material is very problematic. It reacts with moisture in the air when released, creating sulfuric acid and releasing free hydrogen. The release of the sulfur oxide also creates an inhalation hazard requiring a number of precautions that must be put in place to protect personnel. The reaction of the sulfur oxide with water also releases hydrogen gas, which causes rapid embrittlement of hardened steel known as ‘hydrogen embrittlement’, and it has caused multiple failures of heavy equipment undercarriages including tracks and rails, but also can impact buckets and cutting edges and lots of other expensive parts. These parts can break in just days to weeks upon exposure.”
Altiras Recovery has developed a process to protect equipment and personnel so that the raw material can be fully neutralized. Once the gas is eliminated, the material is modified further in a proprietary six-step process to make road base product, called Asphalt Road Base (ARB). “The final road base product is actually much better than typical recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) since the asphaltene content is much higher in the binder than typical asphalt binders, giving it a superior strength and durability.” said Mr. Pencarinha.
Altiras is currently working with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality to obtain approval of the product for beneficial use as a commercial substitute to RAP.
